Board Of Trustees Vote To Make A Provisional Appointment To Fill Board Vacancy For Trustee Area 7

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA. – The Board of Trustees for the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) unanimously voted at their May 10, 2017, Board meeting to make a provisional appointment to fill the Board seat that will be left vacant by Trustee Lynn Hatton-Hodson upon her resignation June 2, 2017.


Information on the appointment and interview process is below: 

Hard copies will also be available at the front desk of the Education Center at 33122 Valle Road in the city of San Juan Capistrano. The deadline for submitting the letter of intent is Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at noon.


According to Board policy, Board members can choose to fill the seat that will be vacated by appointment or special election. Board members chose to make an appointment to save the District the estimated $180,000 cost of a special election and instead work collaboratively with the residents and the cities of Mission Viejo and Rancho Santa Margarita to identify qualified candidates.


Residents of Trustee Area 7 (which covers portions of Rancho Santa Margarita, Mission Viejo, and Coto de Caza) who are registered to vote and have no disqualifying criminal record are eligible to apply. District staff will review the applications to make sure applicants meet the minimum legal qualifications. Board members will interview the applicants and select one to appoint at the special Board meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at 4:30 p.m.


If the Board does not identify a suitable candidate, the Board may elect to order a special election to be held in November 2017. Whoever is appointed or elected will serve out the remainder of this term, ending in November 2018.
