Two Reach Semis in Teacher of the Year Competition

County Selects Two of District’s Three Teachers of the Year

Two Capistrano Unified School District educators are among the 14 semifinalists for the Orange County Teachers of the Year 2012 program, it was announced on Thursday.

San Juan Hills High School French teacher Betsy Schmitz and Ladera Ranch Middle School math and science teacher Bonnie Liedlich were selected to advance to the second round of the county competition, which is an interview by contest sponsors. Capistrano Unified School District is the only district in the county with two semifinalists.

“We are extremely proud of all of our teachers,” Superintendent Joe Farley said. “Betsy and Bonnie are great examples of the high quality teachers we have instructing our students in this District.”

Liedlich, who is the District’s middle school teacher of the year, began her career as a teaching assistant in 1978, becoming a full-time teacher in the District in 1980.

Schmitz won the District’s high school teacher of the year contest. She started teaching for the District in 1993 after being an instructor in Mexico and a student teacher.

Laurie Lowy, a fifth grade teacher at Las Flores Elementary School, was the District’s elementary winner.

CUSD employs about 2,100 teachers at 56 school sites. They average more than 15 years of experience in education and more than half have earned graduate degrees. A little more than 20 percent of teachers statewide have a graduate degree.

All of the teachers of the year from individual school sites were honored in the annual District celebration on Thursday evening at Ocean Hills Community Church in San Juan Capistrano.

Finalists will be announced this month.
