CUSD Board of Trustees Appoints Four New Administrators

Appointees include three school principals and assistant superintendent.


SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA – The Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) has appointed three school principals and one new assistant superintendent, with all roles effective July 1, 2021.


Cary L. Johnson, Ed.D. will fill the new position of Assistant Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction, Education and Support Services. The position was created to support the Board and superintendent’s goal of restructuring the Education and Support Services Department to increase efficiency and enhance District support of social, emotional, and academic support for all students. Johnson joins CUSD from the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD), where he filled several leadership roles over the past 10 years.


Jamie Goodwyn has been appointed Principal of Marblehead Elementary School. She joins CUSD from the Ocean View School District (OVSD), where she has served as a principal for the past nine years. Goodwyn has a total 19 years of elementary education experience, and has been a teacher, a school counselor, and an assistant principal. Goodwyn also has experience with Title 1 Compliance, School Site Council, developing an enhanced STEAM-focused elementary school, increasing student enrollment, and increasing family involvement.


Michael Hatcher has been appointed Principal of Aliso Niguel High School, where he’s served as interim principal for the past year. Hatcher has been a site administrator in CUSD for the past eight years. He worked closely with staff, students, and parents to continue a focus on high achievement despite obstacles created by the pandemic. Prior to that role, he served as the Guidance Assistant Principal for five years, during which time he oversaw curriculum and instruction, staff-wide professional development, school-wide communication and implementation of the Professional Learning Community process.


Shari Nelson has been appointed Principal of Castille Elementary School, where she has served for the past year as interim principal. Nelson has been with CUSD for 11 years as a classified, certificated, and administrative staff member. Nelson has created professional learning opportunities in many topics including curriculum and instruction and behavior management. She also has evaluated, supervised, and counseled both certificated and classified staff; and overseen general and special education programs and the facilitation of Professional Learning Communities.
